swim lesson

last sunday big guy and I started our newest adventure, taking swim lessons at the local Y.  Big guy loves swimming, so I thought it'd be a fun winter activity.  We got to the Y a little big early.  But we had been talking about swimming in the pool for an hour, so he was ready to roll when he saw the swimsuit come out in the locker room.  We had to wait for the group before us to finish up, much to big guy's annoyance.  He kept trying to escape into the pool, obviously had he been successful would have made me the worst mom in the room.  Which of course would have been easy, since it was mostly dads in the pool with their kids.

Finally, it was our turn!  yay!  we got in and my first thought was, oh geez, I hope no one had a stomach virus and has been in this pool today.  A bizarre thought, I know.  But germs freak me out.  Anyway, the class was like on crack.  We moved really quickly from one activity to the next one.  I was so anxious in the pool because we were moving so fast.  First splashing, then blowing bubbles, then we were dipping our ears, then plunging our heads, then jumping, then more splashing.  Crack swim lesson.  I eventually got to the point after 15 minutes and a lot of swallowed water, that I was just going to use the techniques this guy was doing to go at my own pace.  The franticness was overwhelming and by the end big guy wasn't too keen on being in the pool anymore.

We got out early and went to wash off in the showers.  And that probably was the most fun because the shower head is hand held so big guy could strip down and get hosed off, just like at the shore.  We got changed and headed over to the wawa to pick up yogurts for lunch.  We ate and then big guy refused to take a nap.  DAMN!  My plan to exhaust him didn't work.  We ended up going to the duckpond and feeding the ducks, which was very fun.  Then big guy took the hugest poop on the planet, it was unbelievable. He then proceeded to have diarrhea   Great, we apparently did swim with someone who had a stomach virus!

bye bye binky

ok, don't judge.  Up until new years night, big guy still used a binky.  But only at bed time.  Hubs and I had quietly been discussing how to get rid of the last one.  And then it happened.  He bit a hole in it.  It was small.  But still a hole.  The clincher for me was when we went to the franklin institute and I saw some five year old walking around with a binky.  In daylight hours.  In public.  Shame.

so, the hole biting was a blessing in disguise.  As is the fact that big guy is old enough to understand when I said, you bit a hole in the binky.  You can't use it any more because it's broken.  Bye bye binky. And he will patiently repeat back to me about the binky.  First, he was very concerned and would ask for it a lot.  Now, he might mention it and I simply change the subject.  Whew!!!

the next part of our potty adventure

I think we have reached the next part of our potty training adventure.  the "let's sit and wait" until big guy actually goes.  See normally when it's time to poop, I shove big guy on the potty and after resisting for a minute or so (read- try to escape the potty) he pushes and goes.  But tonight was a bit different.  He obviously had to go because he was not eating one of his favorites, homemade sloppy joes on whole wheat w/ a side of peas.  after several stern comments from me about either eating dinner or sitting on the potty, he opted involuntarily to sit on the potty.

Then started the ten minute mommy versus big guy wrestling match onto the potty.  After a lot of crying and sweating, he got off.  we had a chat.  He decided to go eat dinner.  Yeah, I wasn't fooled either.  He ate about two bites all while making a gagging noise, like it was poison.  So, I made another deal.  If big guy went upstairs and pooped, he could eat whatever he wanted for dinner and watch tv during dinner.  Hmm, he was interested.  Upstairs we went again.  More crying and wrestling.  I went to my next idea.  I said we weren't leaving the bathroom until he pooped.  Angry face.  I suggested we just sit and wait until he has to poop and we can read a book together.  Big guy liked that idea.

We grabbed our new dino book and sat.  Big guy patiently sat while I read.  Then he started to get up.  I grabbed those little ribs and held him until he went.  there were some tears, but mostly me clapping and telling big guy how proud I was that he was such a big boy who sat and waited on the potty.  I think a definite improvement!!!  C'mon wantint go to pee on the potty!

dino day

Today we had a dino-filled day!  we went to the academy of natural sciences, on of our favorite museums.  We started off at the "outside-in" play area for the kids.  FIlled with animals you can pet, this area has a sand pit, w/ canoe, bee hive (safely ensconced in glass), and full of interactive science activities.  After I pet the bunny, which big guy was obsessed with talking about, but much like santa didn't actually want to touch, and a turtle, we headed down to see the butterfly exhibit!  Then made a beeline for the dino area.  We walked like a dinosaur and crocodile and saw some pretty cool skeletons.  Following this, we went to the gift shop and read this really cool series of books called, "How do dinosaurs...?"  big guy liked the one called how do dinosaurs say goodnight   Which I think he picked b/c the trex is playing with a train.  We ate lunch then hit the road home.

Following big guy and I both napping on the couch, we played outside on our new xmas bike.  Then we had a disastrous mini trip to the jcpenny.  followed by a delicious dinner at our favorite pizza place that plays movies in the kid section.  They were playing "land before time," a dinosaur movie.  big guy was enraptured.  He ate his whole slice of white pizza without stopping.  then when we could finally pull him away, we got some cookies with m&m's- a favorite.  then home for bath and bed.  FOllowing bath and teeth brushing,  big guy chose to read his new dino book instead of his good night train book. whoa! and he kept talking about his "Din-or."  so precious and a GREAT day!

xmas day four

so, we finally made it to thursday!  big guy and I went to have brunch with grandma C, grandpop J, and Uncle I.  And of course there were more presents!  big guy loves their house because uncle I has so many toys and he can run like a crazy person.  We opened up presents before eating.  big guy got some cool mini books to learn about colors, a really cool board with foam pieces to learn about shapes, a fold out book to learn about numbers, and an awesome motorbike!  Which of course will have to be built by hubs.  Meaning big guy should be able to play with it by august!!! haha!!!  big guy and I ate some bagels, yogurt, and fruit before heading home for naptime!  Day four, the final day, we were done!

xmas - day three

whew!  almost done with the xmas fun!  after aunt M departed with lots of hugs and kisses, we skyped with grandma dino so she could see big guy ripping open his presents.  big guy got a bunch of train books, puzzles, and a construction zone with remote control dump truck!  big guy was hooked.  he happened to open the construction zone first and then was so enamored he didn't even realize there was more.  but we were just glad dino could watch him have so much fun.  After that we went to have breakfast at dunkin donuts with one of our gift cards (thanks Aunt M)!  Then we napped for a few hours and relaxed the rest of the day!

xmas

xmas morning big guy actually slept in until 6:45 (yay!) due to xmas eve festivities.  We got up and let big guy open his gifts in hope of a repeat from last year, where big guy played quietly for an hour while hubs and I got to relax.  It sort of worked out!  Aunt M was visiting, so we opened her gifts and she opened ours before she went to take the dog to the dog park.  Following her departure, hubs and I started on our respective piles.  My highlights being a new camera- it's pink!- and a pair of real hunter wellies.  Hubs highlights were a new pair of slippers -from the croc website- and a new wedding ring (he lost his last year at the pool).  Big guy got a new wooden thomas train set (misty island shake shake bridge) and the coolest thing ever- duplo train set!  Both of which he alternately played with for the rest of our xmas vacation.

following present opening, hubs made us a HUGE breakfast- pancakes and bacon.  All of which we all ate too much of, but hubs makes the best pancakes in the world.  After breakfast, we were all playing with our stuff until Grandma J arrived!  Big guy got to open, yes, more presents.  He got puzzles, books, mega blocks train set, and his big present he opened in lancaster (his bike).  big guy at this point was an expert present opener.  he knows to go right for the seams!

After that fun, I put our some snacks.  we had cut up fruit, veggies with dip, cheese and crackers, and I made pepperoni rolls.  We all ate and laughed.  Then went outside to see how the new bike worked on the sidewalk.  Very well actually, we went into the condo complex around the corner's parking lot.  big guy then found a puddle of mud and we were poking/slapping sticks into it for a while.  so long in fact that grandma J and hubs left us to the messiness.  we made it back inside and I ran over to the starbucks, mmm, nothing better than xmas hot chocolate.  hubs put on star wars and big guy passed out (which was our technique the rest of the week. he could barely make it through ten minutes without sleeping. hehe)  but then started coughing and threw up.  sigh.

we finished the night with the polar express and more nebulizing before turning it in!  Xmas was a wonderful day, but we weren't quite done yet!

xmas eve

Xmas eve was the beginning of four days of the present opening extravaganza that we call xmas.  Like last year, we headed over to Uncle E and Aunt K's house to be with all of Aunt K's family.  Lots of kids, lots of laughter, and a ton of food.  I had made this yummy pumpkin, cream cheese, sour cream dip that you dunk ginger snaps into.  heavenly and addictive!  We got there around 12:30 and then the fun began.

Big guy had fallen asleep in the car on the way there, but soon perked up when he heard all the kids upstairs screaming in the playroom.  He essentially destroyed the room.  Taking out every toy, demolishing all lego made products, and screaming with delight during video game time with hubs.  It was so super fun to see him running around having fun.  Following lunch, it was time to open presents. Big guy got two of the same gift (which Aunt K and her sister had both unknowingly bought him), a hess helicopter, and a interactive ball.  big guy was thrilled with the gift he got two of- a travel geotrax set with trains and animals.  We added some extra geotrax from cousin C's bin and he was set for a few hours.  We stayed until about five before heading home.  Big guy surprisingly was awake for the whole car ride- I think he was wired from so much fun.  UPon arriving home we did some nebulizing.  I know, he got sick that morning with a cough.  Then the child passed out!!!  Day one of present opening a definite success.

what if...

big guy ate so many green beans that he turned into a green bean?  It could have happened had I not flagged him tonight.  we had tortellini and steamed green beans for dinner.  Not interested in the tortellini, after all we had tortellini and broccoli last night.  But the green beans were a huge hit.  I had made a grilled cheese, mmm, love grilled cheese.  Big guy actually ate an entire grilled cheese by himself.  He's never shown any interest in grilled cheese.  but paired with green beans- a definite hit!

growth spurt?

big guy has been tanking food the past few days.  for instance, we went to reading terminal market on new year's eve to see the model train display.  big guy ate the following in this order: soft pretzel, chocolate ice cream with sprinkles, banana, apple, corned beef, and a chocolate chip cookie. Hey- don't judge, it was a holiday.  And then the next morning we had a celebratory breakfast- pancakes, bacon, and mixed fruit.  tanked.  dinner was pasta with meat sauce, toast with butter, broccoli.  tanked.  mind you two huge poops came out today.  but his teacher said he got taller over break!  so, growth spurt?
